Opal Celebrates 93rd Birthday in Mississippi

Turning 93 is not stopping Opal Lee of Fort Worth, TX who will be taking her walking campaign for a National Juneteenth holiday to Mound Bayou, MS on Thursday, October 10 at 3:30 PM starting at Taborian Hospital102 E. MLK Jr Drive.A former educator, she is excited that the students and parents from I.T. Montgomery Elementary will be joining her on her walk to Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church. Having walked in Detroit, MI, Williamsburg, VA, Rentiesville, OK, Galveston, TX, Jersey City, NJ and Birmingham, AL, Ms. Lee plans to continue her trek across the country to tell about the unifying affect Juneteenth can have to heal the nation.

Ms. Lee relaunched her 2016 grassroots walking campaign to bring awareness to the need for Juneteenth to be a National Day of Observance in July. She plans to walk 2.5 miles at each stop across the country tomobilize support for the online petition to gather more than 100,000 signatures when the it goes live on October 20th. Since turning 93, she acknowledges that time is of the essence and hopes that she will see legislation passed in both houses of congress in 2020 that updates US Code 36 which lists our national observances and holidays.

A board member of the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation (NJOF) since 1999, Mrs. Lee is giving it her all to ensure that the importance of Juneteenth as a unifying event is not forgotten.
