92-YEAR-OLD OPAL LEE TO ADD DEBATE TO HER WALK FOR JUNETEENTH

Ms. Opal Lee of Fort Worth, TX will be attending the 3rd Democratic Debate as a guest of Senator Bernie Sanders in Houston, TXbefore her walking campaign for Juneteenth holiday awareness on Saturday, September 14th in Galveston, Texas where the celebration got its origin. Ms. Lee relaunched her 2016 grassroots walking campaign to bring awareness to the need for Juneteenth to be a National Day of Observance in July in Detroit, walked in Virginia and Oklahoma ahead of this fourth stop on her journey. She plans to walk 2.5 miles at each stop across the country tomobilize support for the Change.org online petition to gather more than 100,000 signatures when the it goes live in October. NEXT STOP Houston & Galveston, TX– As the eyes of the nation focus on Houston, TX for the third Democratic Debate, Ms. Opal hopes to get an audience with some of the candidates to impress upon them how important the holiday can be in unifying the country. She is inviting them and other elected officials to walk the 2.5 miles with her from 2702 Seawall to the Juneteenth historical marker at 22nd & Strandstarting at 8:00 AM. Ms. Opal appreciates the significance of actually walking in Galveston, the birthplace of the Juneteenth celebration.  Her history making journey will take her pass the Pleasure Pier, Old Central, Jack Johnson Park, Ave L Baptist Church, City Hall, Reedy Chapel AMEand Ashton Villa.


A board member of the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation (NJOF), Mrs. Lee at 92 years of age is giving it her all to ensure that the importance of Juneteenth as a unifying event is not forgotten. NJOF is seeking support for Juneteenth legislation to update US Code 36 which lists our national observances and holidays.
