Overview

This campaign is to urge the United States Congress to sign into law Juneteenth as a National Day of Observance like Flag Day before President Obama leaves office. For over 40 years, Opal Lee, who is in her 90th year, has worked locally to promote Juneteenth Independence Day in Fort Worth, Texas. After several letters and petitions, she has decided to take the campaign to the people on a national level through “Opal’s Walk 2 DC”. Her campaign will include circulating petitions both physical and online to the White House with a goal of 100,000 signatures by October 1, 2016. Mrs. Lee will walk until she reaches the White House to receive a response to her petition. She also hopes to speak with President Obama personally. Download Full Letter Here

Letter to Pastors

Dear Pastoral Friends I need your support and the support of your parishioners for my “Walk to DC.” This campaign is to urge the United States Congress to sign into law Juneteenth as a National Day of Observance like Flag Day before President Obama leaves office. For over 40 years, I’ve worked to promote Juneteenth as not just a Freedom Day for African Americans, but as a unifying event of mutual understanding in Fort Worth, Texas because “None of us are free until we’re all free.” Download Full Letter Here
